When the United Colonial Fleet Authority sought volunteers for a one-way exploratory mission to a distant planet capable of supporting life most of those volunteers came from The Order of the Abundant grace of the Cosmic Christ, a religious commune in the Sea of Tranquility. Having already chosen a life of study, free from earthly attachments, they were ideal candidates to travel further than any human beings before them, transmit their discovers, and never return. They came to explore, to marvel, to worship, and to die. They named the caretaker android assigned to their expedition Testament.

After decades of life on this new planet, Testament finds their vast library of downloaded religious texts ill-suited to answering their spiritual questions as they try to care for Sister Judith, the last living member of the expedition. They must each face an uncertain future alone on a miraculous world in a story that grapples with the frayed boundaries between knowledge, faith, love, and despair in the extreme frontiers of both space and religion.

Reader Reviews

“This serenely paced book has a careful yet powerful touch. With its various turns, J. Marshall Smith harnesses major questions of the soul. I'm grateful for Testament.”

"Testament is a fresh reimagining of the most ancient questions about community, beauty, and purpose. This is a story you will think about for a long time after you read it."

“I have thought about this book every single day since reading it.”
